THE SOUTHWEST INDIAN JEWELRY COLLECTION
Almost as if she were purposefully collecting for a museum,Millicent Rogers selected examples of native American and hispano arts and crafts of exceptional significance,quality,and diversity,Given her interest in jewelry design and fabrication,it comes as no surprise that almost 30 percent of the museum’s core collectionis comprised of southwest Indian jewelry,this collection od 1281pieces of jewelry includes 168 bracelet,776 buttons,112necklaces,28concha belts:15ketohs:70rings,25pairs of earring:13pair of jaclas:27pins:14 belt buckles:11pendants:22miscellaneous items,including headstalls,flasks,pouches,collar points,and bolos:and 183tools,including pump drills,anvils,stamps,dies,soldring tools,and casting tufa.the colletion is most heavily representative of Navajo and Zuni silver bracelets,with several examples of shell and stone necklaces from santo Domingo and some of the other new mexico pueblos.
EVEN THOUGH THE MAJORITY OF THE PIECES IN THE COLLECTION CAME FROM MILLICENT Roger’s PERSONAL COLLECTION,OTHER INDIVIDUALS HAVE DONATED PIECES OVER THE YEARS THAT HAVE MADE THE COLLECTION MORE COMPREHENSIVE IN BOTH HISTORIC AS WELL AS CONTEMPORARY WORKS.
